Strategy

Transition strategy

We help mining companies map emissions across their value chain and develop decarbonisation strategies grounded in credible targets. Strengthen the investment case for transition while reducing exposure to fuel, carbon and compliance costs.

Climate risks and resilience

We help mining companies assess climate-related risks, understand their potential financial impact and identify opportunities to strengthen resilience. Build a strategy that de-risks operations, adapts to rising heat and water stress, and manages increasing transition pressures.

Market transformation

We convene multi-lateral development banks, industry leaders and miners to define sector roadmaps, test business models and set clear pathways for energy transition metals, enabling coordinated action.

Supply, sustainability and a sector in flux

Mining and metals are central to modern life, from infrastructure to smartphones to EV batteries. They are foundational to economic growth and the clean energy transition. But supply is struggling to keep up, and companies face increasing pressure to cut emissions while expanding production.

Mining relies on access to natural resources, energy, water and long-term investment. Many of the regions richest in critical minerals are also increasingly exposed to the impacts of climate change. At the same time, expectations around environmental and social performance continue to grow, placing greater scrutiny on how mining projects are developed and operated. In addition to sustainable supply, the sector has to do so equitably, so mineral-rich nations and the communities within them benefit from it.

The Carbon Trust works with some of the world's largest mining and metals companies to design transition strategies, helping them strengthen long-term resilience.

We work with philanthropics and industry bodies to develop sector-wide transition roadmaps and build the evidence needed for viable business models that support coordinated action across the sector.

Mining provides critical inputs to everything we use in our daily lives. For clean technologies to combat climate change, we cannot afford mining activities to exacerbate the climate crisis – this would effectively delay progress.
