Overview

Steel is the largest source of embodied carbon within offshore wind developments, making it a critical area for decarbonisation. Decisions taken over the next five years will play a pivotal role in determining whether the industry’s carbon footprint decreases or grows as offshore wind accelerates.

The Steel Decarbonisation Pathway set out a path for increasing the use of lower emission steel in offshore wind projects while reducing the overall embodied carbon across the wider supply chain.

This work was supported by leveraging open industry dialogue, conducting economic analysis and engaging with key stakeholders in the steel and offshore wind sector. The pathway outlines ten activities for different key stakeholders to undertake from the short to long term, organised across the following five key themes:

  • Measurement and reporting
  • Demand generation
  • Funding attainment
  • Circularity and effective design
  • Policy and regulation
