Michael brings over two decades of climate change experience and will work closely with Chris Stark to ensure a seamless transition when he starts his new role with the UK government in August 2024. He has played a central role in driving the Carbon Trust’s mission to accelerate the move to a decarbonised future since he joined in 2002, holding several strategic and operational roles, including Director of Strategy, Director of Technology Development and his current role as Chief Operating Officer.

This comes at an exciting time for the Carbon Trust, with a strategic refresh in the coming months, ensuring the organisation delivers increased impact across its activities with clients and partners in the transition to Net Zero.

Julia King, Baroness Brown, Chair of the Carbon Trust Board said:

“I am delighted that Michael has agreed to take on the role as the Carbon Trust’s next CEO. We are blessed with a wealth of talent at the Carbon Trust and I look forward to working closely with Michael as we accelerate and amplify the Carbon Trust’s impact on climate action.

“The development and implementation of the new strategy will be pivotal in reinforcing the Carbon Trust’s reputation as an innovative organisation in the transition to a sustainable future while delivering tangible results.

“We are all sad to see Chris leave so soon, but we recognise the significance of his new cross-government role. We wish Chris every success in this exciting new appointment.”

Michael Rea, Chief Operating Officer, the Carbon Trust said:

“I am excited to be taking on the CEO role at the Carbon Trust at a very critical time. I want to thank Julia King and the Board for placing their trust in me. Chris has already made a positive impact in the short time he has been with us and I thank him for his great work to date.

“I look forward to shaping the next stage of the Carbon Trust’s development working closely with colleagues across the company. Our mission to accelerate the move to a decarbonised future has never been more important. I am eager to begin working with clients, partners and colleagues as CEO to drive impact and meaningful progress in the fight against climate change.”

Chris Stark, Chief Executive, the Carbon Trust said:

“I am so grateful to the Carbon Trust. It is a brilliant, impact-driven organisation, with so many talented people, and I am confident that it will continue to play an important role in the global Net Zero transition. I’ve known Michael for over a decade and am confident he is the right person for the job. The Carbon Trust is in good hands.”
