The positive impact of food waste redistribution

This report shows the positive environmental impact FareShare has generated by redistributing surplus food which would otherwise be wasted. By outweighing the organisational emissions associated with redistribution and operations with the positive impact, the report reflects FareShare's total net impact.

Overview

This report has been developed together with FareShare, one of UK's largest organisations redistributing surplus food to charities that turn it into meals. FareShare's activities have both social and environmental positive impacts.

To quantify the environmental impact, the Carbon Trust carried out an analysis quantifying the greenhouse gas emissions and embedded water consumption of the avoided waste. This report explains the methodological basis for the conducted analysis and results. To reflect net impact, the Carbon Trust also calculated FareShare's operational emissions through an analysis of their Scope 1 and 2 emissions, as well as outsourced distribution and transportation.

Key findings

The report highlights the positive environmental effects of redistribution of food that would otherwise go to waste:

  • By redistributing 6,699 tonnes of food, FareShare avoided 10,698tCO2e being released.
  • The total water footprint of the avoided food waste was 10,216,904m3 of embedded water.
  • If compared to FareShare’s operational emissions of 1,246.87 tCO2e in total, FareShare achieved net impact of 9,450.13GHG abatement in total (for reporting year 2019/2020).
