Overview

The Climate Action Pathway for Net Zero Cooling lays out, for the first time, a vision for action to 2050. The pathway, co-authored by the Carbon Trust, Cool Coalition, Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program, Oxford University and High-Level Champions, details the key milestones that will be necessary to fully implement the Paris Agreement, exceed the Kigali Amendment and contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The accompanying Pathway to Net Zero Cooling Action Plan highlights in detail the areas where progress is needed and includes an action table that has been endorsed by a range of leading organisations and institutions including CLASP, the Centre for Sustainable Cooling, E3G, the Environmental Investigation Agency, IGSD, RMI, the University of Birmingham and UN Environment Programme.

Cool Calculator

To help stakeholders plan their own scenario for a 2050 cooling sector, a “Cool Calculator” – an open source excel-based 2050 scenario tool – has been developed. The Cool Calculator allows stakeholders to run simple but open calculations on key aspects of cooling decarbonisation, empowering them to identify a set of solutions that works best for particular regions and/or sectors.

The Cool Calculator has been developed in Microsoft Excel to enable ease of use and accessibility. After downloading the tool, please also allow for macros to run in your Excel programme as the Cool Calculator uses this to provide you an easy user experience. Please ensure you read the “introduction” tab in the Cool Calculator which provides an overview of the tool and a step by step guidance on how to use it.

If you have any questions on the tool or have ideas on how to improve it, please email coolingefficiency@carbontrust.com.

About the report

The first ever report tracking progress made by cooling suppliers towards the Race To Zero and Cooling Climate Action Pathway is now available. Cooling Suppliers: Who’s Winning the Race to Net Zero, states that 49 out of 54 companies assessed have yet to commit to ambitious net zero targets, despite some efforts to reduce their emissions.

The report – released by the Race to Zero campaign, K-CEP, the Carbon Trust and other partners in the UN Environment Programme-hosted Cool Coalition – assesses cooling firms against three key impact areas defined in the Cooling Climate Action Pathway. The report calls on cooling firms to show increased ambition to line up with net zero commitments from over 100 governments and many other private sector actors.

“Efforts to race to net zero cooling present an incredible opportunity to meet ambitious climate, environment and development goals and unlock the clean energy transition” said David Aitken, Director, Innovation at the Carbon Trust. “These tools show how we can get there.”
