Applying the new Land Sector and Removals Standard in agriculture

Overview

Agricultural and land‑use emissions had fallen by just 5% in 15 years in the UK alone. To accelerate further cuts, agriculture businesses needed better ways to track land‑use change and removals - and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol’s final Land Sector and Removals Standard (LSRS) was designed to help.

The updated LSRS marked an important step toward more consistent, credible accounting of land‑sector emissions and removals across global value chains.

In the webinar, our agriculture experts Cecile Gallet, John Kazer and Joshua Howard explained what the finalised requirements would mean for footprinting and how to implement the LSRS in practice. The session covered:

  • LSRS requirements: where the standard offered clarity and where technical or operational challenges remained, including removals reporting and traceability expectations.
  • Balancing compliance and decarbonisation: how to meet the requirements while continuing to drive emissions cuts across land‑based supply chains.
  • Interactions with other frameworks: how the LSRS aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative’s guidance on FLAG emissions and the Corporate Net Zero Standard (version 2).
