Offshore Wind Accelerator: Impact of SF6-free regulations and emerging of alternative solutions on Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) design and operation

Call for proposals from companies and consortia interested in undertaking a study is to understand the operational implications of emerging SF6-free regulations and to evaluate available alternatives for high-voltage switchgear in the offshore wind sector. A key focus will be on understanding the regulatory and practical challenges associated with the parallel use of SF6-based and SF6-free technologies during the transition period, including the technical and logistical feasibility of retrofitting or replacing existing SF6 switchgear with SF6-free solutions in high-voltage operational offshore wind and transmission switchgear assets.

The main objectives of this work are to establish the key points below.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance through the provision of market specific clarity on SF6 regulatory requirements.
  • Provide insights into the real-world implications of transitioning to SF6-free GIS.
  • Provide guidance on mixed fleet management strategies of SF6 and SF6-free GIS.
  • Inform project development decisions in relation to future-proofing assets to align with expected regulations.
