Calling for entries from companies and consortia interested in undertaking a study to understand at a component level the differences between fixed and floating turbines.
The Floating Wind JIP would like to:
- Understand at a practical level what impact operation on a floating structure may have on the robustness of WTG components.
- Understand where differences in the practicalities of maintenance operations for floating offshore wind farms may lead to different choices in the optimisation of product design and robustness.
To achieve these objectives, it is expected that the following activities would be necessary:
- Assess at a selected number of components in context to the WTG functionality and design to understand potential limitations and associated sensitivities such as loads and motions.
- Undertake a review of how different operating conditions are likely to be encountered across different locations and how this could impact component design.
- *Use existing, published or project provided driving load cases and load envelopes for selected components as input, and apply a generic FMECA to assess how these affect failure modes and risk in floating versus fixed operation.
- Review and assess the feasibility of components to be redesigned or upgraded to address specific floating wind turbine challenges (e.g. nacelle acceleration and tilt angle).
- Review and assess the feasibility of components to be redesigned or upgraded, additional systems added or ongoing maintenance activities adjusted to increase robustness or improve maintenance outcomes (e.g. increased lubrication of components). Provide a cost benefit analysis in context to component upgrades or redesign required ensuring to ensure that the commercial aspects differentiating fixed from floating are clear.
*Pl ref to previously completed FLWJIP projects: Wind turbine generators for floating wind and numerical modelling guidelines and standards projects.
