Black Start Demonstration from Offshore Wind (BLADE)

Calling for OEM input to demonstrate how a combination of offshore wind and onshore BESS can restore the onshore system.  

The BLADE project is requesting active OEM input, in the form of models, software and engineering time. Key components:

  • Grid following offshore wind turbines
  • Grid forming onshore BESS
  • Grid following HVDC systems
  • E-STATCOMs
  • SynCons
  • Grid forming offshore wind turbines
  • Grid forming HVDC systems

This demonstration is the final stage of the BLADE project. To date, BLADE as devised and conducted a site-specific – but OEM generic – feasibility study.  The final stage is to fully de-risk the BLADE restoration methodology through an OEM-specific detailed modelling and lab-based real time demonstration.

BLADE is also seeking to evolve regulatory and market requirements in parallel to the demonstration, to allow offshore wind and BESS to contribute to system resilience and participate in new markets.
