Fibre Optic Cable Protection Assessment project reports

Three reports investigating the issue of cable failure and design recommendations to mitigate risk have been published by the Offshore Wind Accelerator.

Overview

The offshore wind industry has identified cable failure as a high-profile and costly issue. In order to better understand this issue, the Offshore Wind Accelerator’s Cables Working Group commissioned the Fibre Optic Cable Protection Assessment project to validate earlier modelling and suggest design recommendations to mitigate risk. 

The following three reports have been produced as part of this project:

  • Literature review: An in-depth literature review covering the modelling and calculations of the conditions relating to faults caused by interactions between fibre optic cables and power cores in submarine cables.  
  • Induced voltage modelling: Calculations and modelling to assess the effectiveness of using semi-conductive sheaths and high resistance metallic parts in the fibre optic cables to reduce the risk of failures.
  • Design and testing recommendations: Proposed specifications for cable designs to minimise the risk of failures due to interaction between the power cores and the fibre optic elements of the cable.

Key findings

The results of the induced voltage modelling concluded that a fibre optic cable can be designed to eliminate the type of fault that has been attributed to an interaction between the induced voltage on the cable and the sheaths of the power cores.

Five recommended design features for a fibre optic cable have been identified, along with proposed installation, inspection and monitoring actions. These are all outlined in the Design and testing recommendations report.
