Energy management benefits for hospitality businesses
The UK’s energy system is evolving to become smarter and more flexible, helping to reduce carbon emissions, secure supply, whilst also delivering affordable clean energy. Navigating this transition requires a system-level approach, ensuring that new infrastructure is located in the right places and built at the right time. It will also see consumers transform from playing a passive role, simply having their energy demands met, to becoming active participants, taking control in how and when they use energy.
It’s about being smart. And being smart is only possible with access to the right information.
But different types of information will be required by different groups. For businesses and schools, the immediate need is to create greater awareness of how energy is being used in their premises and ensuring they have access to meaningful energy data.
However, there is often a lack of specialist energy expertise in small businesses and schools, and so the challenge is how best to engage and empower staff in these sectors to play a more active role in interpreting and acting on the energy data their smart meters provide. Getting this right will help business owners, teaching professionals and other key staff make smart decisions and save money by changing the way that they consume energy.
To support the rollout of smart meters, the UK Government is funding an £8.8 million Non-Domestic Smart Energy Management Innovation Competition (NDSEMIC) to develop exciting, new and intuitive solutions to turn energy data into energy savings for smaller non-domestic sites. The competition, which will help the Government deliver its Clean Growth Strategy, targets sites in the retail, hospitality and schools sectors that may not have an energy manager, or have limited time to embed energy management into practice.
The Carbon Trust, alongside Ipsos MORI, are delivering NDSEMIC’s embedded £1.5million Research and Evaluation Programme. This sits alongside traditional evaluation activities, including a series of events and ‘action research’ to generate cross-programme learning and connect funded competition participants with potential partners, pilot sites and future market players.
NDSEMIC is currently piloting a range of innovations developed by seven funded competition partners, from apps to online platforms and schools’ data-driven activities. These aim to provide tailored, actionable insights that require minimal effort on the part of the end user, to support energy efficiency behaviours.
The following seven projects are trialling their innovations as part the Competition throughout 2019 and are looking for businesses and schools to act as pilot sites. See below for information on each of the competition partners and their contact information:
AND Technology Research
AEMS is a dashboard and mobile app that will allow you to track and monitor energy usage and business operations. User friendly displays are offered to visualise and monitor energy usage and display simple results base on energy consumption data. Users are able to set energy budgets and performance targets, can receive alerts for unusual or changing activity, and are provided with meaningful insights on their energy use.
The Considerate mobile app is tailored to SME hospitality operations that empowers all staff to reduce energy. The App provides users with their latest energy and cost performance at a quick glance, correlates this to relevant industry metrics and communicates only the relevant information in a simple form. The App also provides actionable insight on how to achieve energy, emission and cost savings through energy saving tips and is designed to empower the whole team to reduce energy.

E-CAT is an online energy management tool for small non-domestic customers, including schools, and retail and hospitality businesses. It provides real-time data on electricity usage, tailored energy efficiency advice and feedback comparing your consumption with benchmarks of similar organisations. Users can understand their energy consumption: whether it is higher or lower than average, as well as how that comparison changes across the day or across the year.

GlowPro is three inter-connected applications designed to meet different user needs. The real-time energy monitoring is designed to put users in control to support operational efficiency and customer comfort. Functionality includes consumption monitoring, billing, business planning, operational checklists, customer comfort management, and identification of building fabric issues. Intended for use in shopping centres, and retail and hospitality small businesses, the applications have been developed to fit into people's working lives as a benefit, not a burden.

Hoare Lea is leading a consortium to create Untapped, a programme that turns data from a smart meter into actionable insights that can help schools save money. It provides simple energy saving advice and activities tailored to the individual school. The platform will also provide educational resources based on and stimulated by ‘live’ and relevant data. These resources are aimed at meeting needs of the National Curriculum, providing cross-curricular links, and also at 14 ‘Eco’ and other Environmental Clubs.
Samsung’s Energy in Schools consists of an energy management platform, with a portal to help staff manage energy and heat usage in school buildings, a tariff switching portal for energy contract management comparing time-of-use based tariffs, and a teacher and pupil portal and an energy display to support behaviour change and engage building users on energy issues.
It also features an Educational Platform which uses micro:bits and Samsung’s SmartThings IoT platform to deliver curriculum aligned STEM teaching and learning resources for KS2/KS3 supported with micro:bit kit, creating an educational environment to teach the basics of coding to solve real world problems.

Energy Sparks is an online, school-specific energy analysis tool and energy education programme that automatically charts and analyses a school's energy consumption and provides advice on saving energy. Energy Sparks provides alerts to problems with energy consumption or efficiency and individual school-specific energy saving action prompts. It also has tailored online resources and lesson plans that guide pupils and adults through an energy saving programme, along with a comprehensive package of accessible charts, contextual advice and automatic analysis that present gas and electricity usage data in ways that are easy for pupils, teachers, site managers and school management to explore. Energy Sparks also introduces a competitive element with points awarded for completed activities as an incentive to maintain energy saving interventions.
The Carbon Trust has worked with Ipsos MORI and funded competition partners to obtain testimonials from businesses and schools as part of an initial testing phase.
