Offshore Renewables Joint Industry Programme (ORJIP) for Offshore Wind: Displacement in the non-breeding season (DisNBS)

Calling for entries from companies and consortia interested in producing an individual-based model (IBM) capable of estimating effects of displacement in the non-breeding season. The project has three main activities:

i. Identify, collate, and review data to a) quantify the extent of displacement and barrier effects of seabirds in the non-breeding season from offshore wind developments, and b) detect the effects of displacement on behaviour, energetics, demography, and population size.

ii. For suitable species, develop a new IBM of birds in the non-breeding season, parameterised with at-sea survey data and tracking data on winter distribution and activity from multiple colonies, capable of:

a. Predicting the time/energy budgets of seabirds during the non-breeding period,

b. Quantifying the carry-over effects from displacement in subsequent seasons,

iii. For species with low data availability and unsuited to an IBM approach, propose an alternative approach to evaluating the extent and effects of displacement in the non-breeding season, improving upon existing methods where possible.
