Carbon Trust introduces new ISO 50001 advisory support services

A good quality energy management system delivers a number of benefits to an organisation: from reduced overheads and energy risks, to an improved reputation as a sustainable business.

ISO 50001 provides a best practice framework for energy management, putting in place a systematic approach that drives continual improvement in energy performance. It is compatible with other management standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), such as ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management, allowing for an integrated approach.

ISO 50001 can also provide automatic compliance with certain regulations, such as the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) in the UK that requires some businesses to identify cost-effective energy savings opportunities. In the most recent ESOS compliance period approximately five percent of businesses required to meet the regulations complied through this route.

The new advisory services being offered by the Carbon Trust include:

  • ISO 50001 Readiness Review: a questionnaire that guides you through assessing your organisation’s level of readiness for implementing ISO 50001, providing you with a high level overview of what will be required.
  • ISO 50001 Scoping and Analysis: support from the Carbon Trust to develop a scope and boundaries for an energy management system, helping you to understand the likely costs, resource and timescales for implementing ISO 50001.
  • ISO 50001 Report and Implementation Plan: you will receive a bespoke report produced by the Carbon Trust containing an overview business case, a step-by-step resourced implementation plan, and a proposal for any further implementation support that may be required.
  • ISO 50001 Implementation Support: bespoke assistance for your team from the Carbon Trust, which may include: a baseline energy review; the development of an energy management policy, targets and energy performance indicator action plans; energy management process design and documentation; the operation and implementation of processes; internal training and communication support; and internal audits and reviews.
