The Carbon Trust helps TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel website, to extend their GreenLeaders programme - highlighting hotels that are engaging in environmentally-friendly practices.

The world’s largest travel website, TripAdvisor, has extended its GreenLeaders programme into 19 European markets.  The scheme, which helps travellers to make greener choices through selecting hotels that have adopted environmentally sustainable practices, was previously only available in the United States.

The European programme was developed in consultation with the Carbon Trust, the UK Green Building Council, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the International Tourism Partnership. Properties are tiered with Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum awards, with this award shown prominently on the property’s listing on TripAdvisor.

There are a lot of simple, cost effective actions that hotels can take to reduce their environmental impact and become more sustainable; through looking at buildings, catering, laundry, staff behaviour and their supply chain. Having worked with the hospitality industry for over a decade, we know that in almost every case there are ways to implement some well-chosen initiatives that create a greener, more efficient hotel. This results in saving money as well as enhancing the overall pleasurable and memorable experience for guests.

Dominic Burbridge, associate director at the Carbon Trust

The TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme presents a further opportunity to highlight to our customers that Macdonald Hotels & Resorts takes its responsibilities for implementing industry leading environmentally sound sustainability practices extremely seriously.

A number of hotels have already agreed to participate in the scheme, including Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, which already holds the Carbon Trust Standard

The Carbon Trust continues to work with a number of hospitality and hotel businesses to help them measure and reduce their environmental impacts. This includes providing sustainability advice to the UK’s largest hotelier, Whitbread, with its Premier Inn brand. This led to Whitbread becoming the first company to achieve Carbon Trust Standard certification for reductions on carbon, water and waste.
