140 Public sector organisations successfully graduate from Carbon Trust public sector programmes

Largest number of organisations to graduate from the Carbon Trust's public sector programmes in a single year, demonstrating the public sector's on-going commitment to carbon reduction.

At the University of London's Senate House, organisations from across the spectrum of the public sector gathered together for the Carbon Trust's annual public sector carbon management conference. Attendees came from central government departments, local authorities, NHS trusts, non-departmental public bodies, police forces, ambulance services, fire and rescue services, and further and higher education institutions.

Delegates were welcomed to the event by David Kennedy, Chief Executive of the Committee on Climate Change. The event marked the graduation of 140 organisations from the Carbon Trust's public sector programmes, the largest number to graduate in a single year, demonstrating the public sector's on-going commitment to carbon reduction.

Over 600 organisations have now worked with the Carbon Trust on public sector programmes, helping to identify over 93m tonnes of carbon savings and net cost savings of over £2.6 billion.

The Carbon Trust's core carbon management programme has been running for nearly ten years, helping public bodies to calculate a baseline for their emissions and create a business case for carbon reduction - as well as to share ideas and best practice with others. This can enable organisations to identify significant energy cost savings, liberating budgets for use on delivering frontline services, as well as helping to play their part in taking action on climate change.

More recently the Carbon Trust has developed two new programmes for organisations further along in their carbon reduction journey: one that helps to successfully implement low carbon technology, and another that focuses on behaviour change programmes for staff and stakeholders.

The annual Public Sector Carbon Management event hosted by the Carbon brings together a wide variety of organisations facing similar challenges.  Presentations and specialist workshops cover the latest thinking in carbon reduction, and provide an opportunity to share best practice on how to cost-effectively cut carbon, despite limited public funds.
