Are you a manufacturer or supplier of energy-saving equipment?

Get your product listed on the Energy Technology List

The Energy Technology List (ETL) is a government-managed list of energy-efficient products. The ETL is part of the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) tax scheme for businesses, and with more than 14,000 listed products, it is one of the world’s largest databases of top performing energy-saving products.

All products are verified as meeting higher energy efficient performance standards, typically in the top 25% of products available in the market.

Customers can quickly search products on the Energy Technology List and many of them use it as part of their procurement process for new capital equipment.

How the ETL supports businesses

The ETL helps organisations purchase energy efficient products by:

  • Providing an up-to-date list of government verified products.1
  • Providing accelerated tax relief on qualifying purchases that reduces the net capital cost and total cost of equipment ownership.2

The ETL has helped organisations choose the right energy efficient product for their operations since 2001. The service is well known to industrial technology manufacturers, many of whom have listed products. The ETL supports around £500m in energy efficient product sales each year.

How to get your products listed

You can apply to have your energy efficient products listed on the ETL by registering your company and then following a few simple steps to make your online application.

Our application guidance note will take you through the process step-by-step. It is important that you first read the criteria for the technology category to check which is the best suited to your products and to understand what information needs to be provided for a successful product application.

The list is updated twice a month with products that meet their ETL technology criteria and have successfully passed the evaluation process. Over a period of approximately 3-4 years the criteria for each technology are updated to ensure performance thresholds are continually improved to attract the top 25% of products in the marketplace.

For manufacturers and suppliers of energy efficient products: view the webinar recording below for details of how to make a successful product application to the ETL and promote the listing to your customers.

Tips to get the most out of your qualifying products

  • Ensure your customers understand the meaning and value of the ETL (i.e. that products on the ETL meet high energy efficiency performance standards, typically the top 25% of products in the marketplace ).
  • Explain the energy savings and financial benefits (e.g. lower operating costs and accelerated tax relief) to your customers from purchasing energy-efficient equipment that meets the ETL criteria.
  • Use the ETL Logo* when marketing your products.
  • Promote your products’ qualification for the ETL on marketing materials, company website, press releases and social media.
  • Further tips can be found here in the manufacturer’s toolkit.

*The logo should only be positioned alongside ETL eligible, approved and listed products.

Case studies

The university installed 72 high-efficiency hand dryers, which they identified on the Energy Technology List. These products have delivered attractive financial paybacks and energy savings.

West Midlands Railway selected high performance LED luminaires and controls, that were compliant with the UK government’s Energy Technology List. This gave the company confidence that it was purchasing some of the most energy efficient options available in the market.

Further information

Some ETL qualifying products are not listed on the ETL. These include two of the Lighting Controls; Efficient White Lighting Units; Pipework Insulation; Automatic Monitoring and Targeting (aM&T) equipment; Air to Air Heat Pumps, Split, Multi-Split and VRF, CHP For these categories, see the Manufacturer’s Information Factsheet on how you can demonstrate compliance of your products.

ECA scheme exists to help organisations invest in energy-saving products listed on the ETL, helping your customers write off 100 percent of the cost of these energy efficient products against their taxable profits in the first year. This scheme will end in April 2020.
