Tetra Pak is a major multinational food packaging and processing company, that is by sales the largest food packaging business in the world. Headquartered in Switzerland , and operating in over 175 countries, the company employs more than 24,000 people.
Decoupling its environmental footprint from its business growth has been one of Tetra Pak strategic priorities for the past ten years. This involves efforts to directly address the impact of the company’s own operations, as well as improving products and solutions through innovation and resource efficiency. The company also works on the reduction of food waste through the promotion of environmentally efficient packaging that prevents it from being wasted.
In order to encourage its customers to select more environmentally-friendly packaging options and promote its own low carbon product innovations – including the integration of bio-based plastic caps and films – Tetra Pak approached the Carbon Trust to independently verify the methodology used to calculate carbon footprints, thanks to the company’s online Carton CO2e Calculator. The calculator is designed to allow easy comparison of the relative greenhouse gas emissions associated with different packaging choices, allowing Tetra Pak’s customers to better understand the impact their packaging selection will have on climate change.
The Carbon Trust has also certified that Tetra Pak’s calculator generates carbon footprint outputs under European conditions that are in compliance with relevant international and industry standards. In addition, for products using plant-based materials – such as wood fibre and bio-based plastics – customers can see the amount of biogenic carbon that is stored within the product. This information is updated on an annual basis to ensure it is accurate. The Carbon Trust’s footprint label is then used on the calculator outputs, as a way of communicating the independent assurance it has received.
By having detailed carbon footprint information for its carton packaging choices, Tetra Pak is able to supply its customers with accurate information that helps them to more easily measure and certify the full end-to-end impact of their products.
