The need for industrial decarbonisation
In 2018, industry represented 16% of the total UK carbon emissions, with the majority accounted for by industrial energy use. Maximising energy efficiency is a key component of the UK’s transition towards net zero. An industry-wide adoption of the technologies supported through the IEEA programme, could represent 40.6TWh of energy saved by 2031, which is the equivalent of 10MtCO2e cumulative carbon savings over ten years.

What is the IEEA?
- The IEEA programme accelerates the uptake of energy-efficient technologies in the UK by funding and supporting at scale demonstrations of novel technologies at UK industrial sites.
- The focus is on innovations with large cross-sector energy saving and carbon reduction potential.
- Projects typically comprise a technology developer that has developed the new technology, and an industrial partner that is implementing the technology at their site. Some projects are supported by other specialist organisations such as Universities or research organisations.
- A total of £8.1 million from UK government, leveraging £7.6 million in private sector funding, has been committed to 16 projects.
The great benefit of being part of IEEA is that customers can actually come and see a big piece of hardware in operation, which really convinces them it can work for them.

Benefits of the IEEA and initial results
By demonstrating novel technologies under operational conditions, the IEEA seeks to increase the likelihood of their wider adoption across the UK’s industrial sector, bolstering competitiveness, whilst reducing carbon emissions. Many of the technologies are also expected to have applications across industries worldwide, stimulating the export market for UK technology developers.
The programme represents a unique opportunity for UK technology developers to bring their innovations to market, and to prove their technology works at scale in a production environment. Furthermore, the IEEA also provides incubation support to the participants to help them progress the commercialisation of the technology.
The incubation support has been a fabulous addition to a R&D programme which we haven't experienced in the past. That brought about an opportunity to introduce some business model innovation.
