The Carbon Trust Standard
The Carbon Trust Standard is the world’s leading independent certification of an organisation’s impact in respect of the three primary constituents of environmental sustainability:
- Energy usage and greenhouse gas (CO2e) emissions
- Water usage, management and effluent
- Waste management and disposal
Awarded to recognise best-practice and real achievements in reduction, the Carbon Trust Standard helps organisations to Measure, Manage and Reduce their environmental impact, whilst improving their resource management and operational sustainability.
The certification process acts to identify inefficiencies in resource use and provides a framework for improving management processes, reducing waste and costs.
Achieving the Carbon Trust Standard provides independent and internationally recognised verification of your achievements in reducing resource use and waste and offers tangible proof to customers, employees, shareholders and suppliers that you are committed to sustainability
Standard Bearers include a wide range of organisations, all proud to bear the Carbon Trust Standard logo and with over 1,100 organisations having certified, they have helping create a new business culture whereby corporate sustainability is now an essential part of business management.
Organisations choose the Carbon Trust Standard as the leading means to independently validate and certify their achievements in adopting more sustainable business models.
Carbon Trust Standard bearers include
- Allied Bakeries
- Anglian Water
- Branston Ltd
- Bentley Motors
- Center Parcs
- Dept for Energy & Climate Change
- Foreign & Commonwealth Office
Certified organisations have saved save a staggering £165m in energy and operational costs and reduce carbon emissions by over 3.6Mt CO2e every year, with an average annual energy cost saving of £322,000.

Carbon Trust Product Footprint Certification
A product footprint provides an independent and accurate assessment of the total sum of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) or water used throughout a product’s lifecycle, including manufacture, distribution, use and disposal.
Footprinting provides real benefits, including the identification of carbon hotspots and water intensities in the product lifecycle, which typically lead to improvements in resource efficiency and subsequent costs savings.
The Footprint Label can be used to publicly brand footprinted products to communicate their sustainability credentials, build your reputation and drive sales with today’s ever more environmentally aware consumers and business buyers.
Products as diverse as bread, milk, crisps, wine, smart-phones, hand dryers, paper & envelopes, packaging, bins and even corrosion inhibitors have all been footprinted by the Carbon Trust and awarded the Footprint Label.
