Development of low carbon technology in China

This joint venture aims to help create clean energy in China by developing and deploying low carbon technologies.

The China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group (CECEP New window) is a State Owned Enterprise that promotes and advances energy efficiency and environmental-protection for industries and districts that have high-energy consumption and severe pollution.

Scope

CECEP and the Carbon Trust will both invest £5m into the Joint Venture, with the aim of attracting 3rd-party funding of £50m over the next 5 years.

The Joint Venture has two core objectives:

  1. To incubate new and emerging low carbon technologies and introduce selected low carbon businesses from the UK to China.
  2. To provide financial investment for UK and Chinese low carbon businesses in China.

Output

As well as developing and transferring low carbon technology within China, the Joint Venture will facilitate access to Chinese market opportunities.

Additionally, it will arrange access to space on CECEP’s industrial parks at preferential rates, help staff recruitment, and provide legal and business support.

Tom Delay, Chief Executive of the Carbon Trust, said:
“This is great news for the UK as China represents an exciting new market for clean technology businesses. The new venture will act as an important bridge for UK companies entering the Chinese low carbon marketplace.  Our approach to low carbon innovation, coupled with CECEP's expertise in clean energy in
China, will open up new exciting opportunities for UK companies at the cutting edge of carbon reduction."

Miles Templeman, Director General of the Institute of Directors, said: “It is important that UK businesses are helped to benefit from the rapidly growing demand for low carbon technologies in China and in other emerging market economies.  The Carbon Trust’s new joint venture is a good start in opening up the key Chinese market to UK companies.”
