By stimulating low carbon action The Carbon Trust contributes to key UK goals of lower carbon emissions, the development of low carbon businesses, increased energy security and associated jobs.
We take a practical approach – always looking for where we can make the maximum impact and deliver the most value to our customers.
Our achievements
Since our launch in 2001 the Carbon Trust has:
- Helped our customers to save over 38 MtCO2
- Helped our customers to make around £3.7 billion of direct cost savings
- Worked with 75% of FTSE 100 companies, tens of thousands of small and medium sized businesses and over 3,000 public sector bodies
- Certified over 500 companies to the Carbon Trust Standard
- Supported more than 120 early stage companies with leading edge low carbon technologies, helping them to leverage over £123 million in private investment
- Accelerated the development of low carbon technologies that are expected to save over 26MtCO2 per annum by 2050
- Invested almost £33 million in 25 cleantech companies leveraging a further £164 million of private sector co-investment
In 2010/11 alone we:
- Worked with over 22,000 companies and organisations to deliver 14MtCO2 lifetime carbon savings and combined net cost savings over £1 billion (gross financial savings less the project capital costs)
- Leveraged over £56 million into opening low carbon markets, including marine energy, onshore wind and energy efficiency in commercial buildings
- Provided almost £43 million of interest-free Energy Efficiency loans to businesses that will cut 1.3MtCO2 and save companies £125 million over the lifetime of the projects
- Awarded 300 Carbon Trust Standard certifications
- Helped to deliver four biomass heat projects with a total installed capacity of over 7MWth and leveraging £2.5 million investment through our Biomass Heat Accelerator
- Supported six leading wave energy concepts through to deployment of full scale prototypes with £13.3 million of funding through our Marine Renewables Proving Fund (MRPF). This has leveraged £23 million of private investment into marine energy
- Supported 58 new low carbon companies through our Entrepreneurs Fast Track scheme and leveraged over £38 million of private sector investment into those companies that graduated from the scheme
- Provided £5.8 million of follow on investment to early stage low carbon companies in our portfolio, in turn leveraging over £20 million of private sector co-investment
- Continued to increase our impact worldwide and our teams in the US and China worked with government organisations and private companies to provide expert advice on energy efficiency and supply chain and product carbon footprinting
