Our work here focuses on:
- helping the Chinese reduce carbon emissions that affect us all
- enabling UK low carbon technology companies to develop markets in China
Examples of The Carbon Trust’s work includes:
Developing low carbon technologies
In March 2010 The Carbon Trust created the China UK Low Carbon Enterprises Company (CULCEC) to develop new low carbon technologies in China. Our partner, The China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group CECEP is a State Owned Enterprise that invests in energy efficiency and environmental-protection for industries.
The £10 million joint venture accelerates low carbon innovation and technology development in China, opening new markets for innovative, British clean technology companies and reducing global carbon emissions.
The new venture has two core objectives: To incubate new and emerging low carbon technologies and introduce selected low carbon businesses from the UK to China; and to provide financial investment for UK and Chinese low carbon businesses in China. As well as the initial £10 million investment funded by CECEP and the Carbon Trust, the joint venture aims to leverage significant third party funding from the public and private sectors.
Working with cities
The Carbon Trust’s Low Carbon Cities Programme showed that significant carbon savings could be made through city-wide low carbon strategies. Experience working with hundreds of local authorities and cities has now been adapted for China.
In March 2011 we will complete a two-year project with the city of Nanchang in Jiangxi that provides a blueprint for city-wide energy reduction in China. We have:
• calculated the carbon footprint of the city
• suggested projects to reduce emissions
• worked with the city government to include these projects in their Five Year Plan
The Carbon Trust is proud to be working with The China Centre for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University and with Atkins Plc on this project.
The Carbon Trust aims to use the success of this project to help us engage with more Chinese cities.
Reducing business emissions
The Carbon Trust worked with companies in the provinces of Zhejiang, Guangdong and Tianjin and with PKU & Atkins Plc in this energy efficiency initiative.
This work had the support of China’s National Development Reform Commission and was funded by the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office.
The project ran for 19 months and trialled use of our successful UK approach with Chinese businesses. It focused on providing practical advice & energy audits. One of the outputs of the project was a set of Carbon Trust advice publications in Mandarin. View the publications in Chinese.
The Carbon Trust is now discussing further work on energy saving in industry with China’s Ministry of Industry & Information Technology.
